Moya McGinn Mathews
The first time Moya stepped onto a yoga mat she thought, "I don't know what this is but I know I need to do it!" Moya came to the practice of yoga around the turn of the millennium after some challenging experiences of grief, transition and loss and discovered a powerful vehicle for emotional, energetic and physical healing as well as a joyful outlet for her love of movement.
Moya graduated from the Yoga Center of Minneapolis' 200 hour teacher training program in March, 2006, completed an Ashtanga Yoga teacher training with David Swenson in August, 2006, JAI Pre-natal Yoga ® training with Jennifer Grey of the Yoga Center of Minneapolis in 2008 and in August of 2008 she participated in a yoga retreat and pilgrimage to India with teachers Tanya Sowards and Darren Main. She completed Relax and Renew ® Restorative Yoga Teacher Training with Judith Lasater in April of 2010. She continues to deepen her practice and studies with a variety of master teachers. She’s a bit of a travel bug, and in recent years has enjoyed the opportunity to teach yoga in the lush tropics of Ocho Rios, Jamaica, Tulum, Mexico and is planting the seed of intention to make that list of sunny, warm yoga teaching destinations grow.
In addition to her love of yoga, Moya is a professional musician, specializing in sacred music, something she experiences as meditative, "flow activity." Moya is deeply grateful to her students for all they share with her, and wishes to thank her teachers and mentors who have illuminated her path, especially Betsy Weiner, Monique Maxwell and Jennifer Grey. Her life as a teacher and a musician has been profoundly influenced from the start by her parents who taught her by their example the joy of living in service to others. Moya lives in Minneapolis in a petite urban retreat with her beloved companions on the journey, husband, Mike and adult son, Patrick, when he is on break from his academic routine. As much as she enjoys the adventure of travel, there’s no place like home.
